Is used to say something is possible or that someone has the ability to do something.
• You can do it son, said dad.
He can speak 20 languages.
Can I get something to drink.
I can’t sleep.
I can’t write but I can read.
(the subject is very sure at present).
Could (the past of can).
Mary could swim when she was 5 years old.
My great grandfather could could speak five languages.
(past with time marker or con,,,,)
We use COULD especially with these words :
See, hear, taste, feel, remember, understand
Could also shows general ability.
I swear I could see ghosts.
He’s so old he could be your father.
That guy could lift more than 200 Kg |
