1. Decide to be happy. Think and act happy, so that you can create the state of mind for yourself and inspire it in others. To be happy, you have to seize the day and work on your joy right now.
2. Take control. Take charge of your time and schedule to make effective change in your life.
3. Pursue your interests. Happy people are not necessarily the busiest people, but they are usually busy with things they feel enthusiastic about. Seek work and leisure activities that challenge your talents and abilities without overwhelming you.
When you're intensely involved in an activity - drawing, knitting, and woodworking, programming a computer, playing a sport - you experience the state of absorption called "flow. "Flow" is a state of effortless action in which you and the task at hand become one. Total engagement produces a sense of ,,,,,,,ment.
4. Be fit and healthy. Eating right and excersing add to our joy in life. Strenuous exercise releases endorphins, the pleasure chemicals of the body. But there are also great health and happiness benefits in simple activity like walking. Walking gives you time to observe the world, think about the pleasures of the day, and work on building your gratitude bank. It is where mind and body come together.
5. Seek spiritual peace. Studies have shown that people with strong religious faith and affiliations are happier than those without such faith, and they also regain happiness more quickly after experiencing a crisis. Spend time alone without distraction. Simply sit and listen to the silence.
6. Reach out to others. Surround yourself with happy people and nurture these relationships. Tell the people you love how much you love them every single day. Initiate new friendships, and nurture old ones. Get involved in at least one volunteer activity. When you help others, you feel good. Be compassionate and focus beyond yourself, to help those in greater need.
7. Remain Curious. Stay open to new people and experiences as you continue to grow.
8. Keep perspective. Take a moment each day to reflect on the positive things in your life that can make you feel grateful.
9. Like yourself. Naturally happy people think well of themselves, no matter what their level of success, because they don't depend on others for approval. You can improve your self-esteem. First don't dwell on your past. If your parents were supercritical, not affectionate or even absent, give yourself the affirmation you need. Here's how: Self-evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. Realize that your weaknesses are part of being human. Forgive yourself for mistakes; everyone makes them. Set realistic goals. Applaud each positive achievement, no matter how small. Ask close friends and loved ones for support, or be your own cheering section.
10. Most important, accept your feelings. When you stop berating yourself, you're free to experience other emotions - like happiness. |
