[/size] Use of « the » : We can use « the » with singular or plural nouns
Examples:
( The book / The books) And with countable and uncountable nouns
· Countable nouns: things you can count : ship, one ship, two ships
·Uncountable nouns: things you can not count: gold,
We can not say: one gold, two gold

We use “the” when the person, place or thing is unique (there is only one)
Examples:
- The earth.
- The sky
- The equator

Before noun made definite by addition of a phrase or clause
Examples:
A phrase:
- The girl in blue (girl is definite because we are not talking about any girl, but in blue)
Clause:
- The place where I met him.

Before noun which represent particular thing because of locality (place)
Examples:
- Please pass the pen (the pen on the table).
- The car (our car).
- The newspaper ( the one we read)

Examples:
